2019 China Trademark Festival

MARQUES hosted a Forum at the China Trademark Festival, which this year took place in Yinchuan, Ningxia Province, from 4 to 8 July.

Reinout van MALENSTEIN, Senior Counsel of HFG, was one of the speakers in the Forum called Chinese Brands go to Europe, offering guidance on protecting and managing Chinese brands abroad, notably in Europe, through all available administrative, judicial and Customs enforcement procedures. 

The Forum also discussed the best practices for effective IPR enforcement of domestic and foreign global brands in China, including in the light of the benefits from the most recent amendments to the China Trademark Law. 

The panel offered 5 in-depth analyses

  1. EU and China cooperation: raising awareness of and promoting the protection and enforcement of IPRs in favor of business development and economic boost.

  2. Best practices and judicial protection for an effective IPR enforcement of domestic and foreign global brands in China.

  3. Paramount guidance on protecting and management of Chinese brands abroad, notably in Europe, through administrative, judicial and customs enforcement procedures.

  4. Implications of Brexit on IPR protection in Europe.

  5. The industry perspective of global Chinese and European businesses: building effective brand protection strategy plans, key pillars for brand portfolio management and internationalization, and guidance about how to tackle the challenges arising from managing IPR assets domestically and overseas

 

Uwe Over, Past Chair of the MARQUES Council, and Alessandra Romeo, MARQUES External Relations Officer, represented MARQUES in the official meetings with Chinese authorities and the China Trademark Association. 

Gunther Marten, Minister Counsellor and EUIPO IP attaché at the EU Embassy in Beijing made a keynote address that focused on cooperation between the EU and China in raising awareness of and promoting the protection and enforcement of IP rights in favour of business development and economic growth.

Judge Zhang Xiaojin Chief Judge in the Second Trial Division and Member of the Adjudicatory Committee of the Beijing IP Court introduced an overview of the cases the Beijing IP court has dealt with in the past year.

Betty Wang, Deputy IP director at Tencent, Uwe Over, head IP at Henkel, and Mirjam de Werd, Vice-Chair of MARQUES China Team and trademark attorney at Abcor, provided the guidance on protecting and managing Chinese brands abroad, notably in Europe, through all available administrative, judicial and Customs enforcement procedures.

 

Recently Reinout van Malenstein was named "Mr. of the week" (Meester van de week) by the Dutch magazine Mr. Magazine.
